Media Center

The McGarrah Elementary School Media Center is open each day for students, staff, parents, and the community.

Students may check out books from 8:15 AM until 2:00 PM each day.

Teachers may bring their classes to the media center for stories, lessons, and/or activities.

The media center sponsors many programs and activities, including WKIDS, myOn, the Reading Passport Program, Book Clubs, Scholastic Book Fairs, as well as special and holiday events.

WKIDS presents the morning announcements each day via the IPTV, live from the media center. WKIDS is groups of students who report the daily news, the weather, the lunch menu, and other information using state of the art audiovisual equipment.

myOn is an online reading program designed to assess and to track students’ Lexile reading levels. Students read electronic books and take a short assessment.  By viewing the students results the teachers can identify the progress that students are making. All McGarrah students have been challenge to meet the goal of reading ten books, taking ten tests, and scoring an 80% or higher each nine week grading period. Students who meet this goal will be recognized and rewarded.

The Reading Passport Program allows students to practice their comprehension skills and writing skills. Students will check out books from the library. After reading the books, they will complete a reading reflection/journal page for each book. These pages will be graded by their teachers.  Students who earn a grade of 80% or higher will receive a stamp on their reading passport.  When a student has 25 stamps on his/her passport, he/she will be recognized and rewarded as a member of the 25 Book Club.

Book Club members will receive a certificate, their names will be posted on the front hallway board, and they will receive a reward.  At the end of the year, they will be invited to attend the 25 Book Club Party.

Each year McGarrah participates in several national events. Jump Starts’ Read for the Record will be in October. The National Education Association’s Read Across America will be in March. Children’s Book Week will be in May. Information about the events will be sent home at least one week prior to the event.

McGarrah hosts three Scholastic Book Fairs each year.  Information about the dates and times of the fairs will be sent home at least one week prior to the fair.
